Wiki editing for beginners
From Tickipedia
Once you get going, you can check out wikipedia itself for editing tips. This is just a beginner's guide to some of the simplest forms of wiki editing.
Q: How do I edit a page?
- A: Click on the edit tab at the top of the page to edit anywhere on the page, or click on one of the edit links on the right of section breaks to edit just that section. What you see may look quite a bit different from what appears on the page, but you can probably sort out most of the text. Maybe you should start by finding a mistrake on one of the pages. Simply correct it, and you are now a ticki-editor.
Q: What are section breaks?
- A: They are just places where you can indicate logical grouping. If the page is big, it is often easier to find where you need to edit by looking for a section. The sections can also be used for navigation, and when there are enough of them, a table of contents is automatically formed.
Q: How to handle the Table of contents?
- A: Use the command __TOC__ (double underlines on both sides) to set the table of contents to an exact location. Use __NOTOC__ somewhere on the page to eliminate the table of contents from the page.
Q: Why does the text in the edit window look different from the finished product?
- A: Most of it allows users to type in markup information in a simple way. Some of it will be familiar from forums, or from html markup, but it is often easier. Infact, wiki often allows both html and wiki markup, and handles both. For example, to make something bold, you can use <b>Bold</b>, or with wiki editing put three single quotes on either side like this Bold, either method will produce this: Bold.
Q: Could you make a list of some of the more common markups?
- A: Okay, try here.
Q: I also see lots of links in the pages, how are they made?
- A: Well, there are three types of links that I know about. Internal, external and anchors. An internal link goes to someplace within the wiki, typically to another page, but sometimes to a section within the page. Those are made by putting double square brackets around some text. If it looks like this Editing Help, That would take you to a page called Editing Help. Alternatively, you can have the text that shows, differ from the page name. If I have Game Page, then left of the vertical bar (called a pipe) is the page name, and to the right of it is the text that appears on the current page. An external link takes you out of the ticki, perhaps to a forum article on the Days of Wonder site. These links use a single square bracket on the outside. on the inside, start with a regular url, followed by a space, and then the text you want to show. For example, to show Elric's User info page, you might use Elric's User info. This will produce a link to the user info, but the text will be Elric's User info.
Q: How do I make a new page?
- A: Typically, I create a link in an existing page such as A New Page to a page I want to create. When I save the page, the link appears in red, showing that it is a link to a non-existent page. Simply click on the link, and you will be given the opportunity to create a new page with the name in the link. Alternatively, you can type the name of the page you want into the search box on the left. It will probably tell you that no such page exists, but give you the opportunity to create that page. This is probably most useful if you want to create the page, but don't want it linked to until you are satisfied with the results.
